Gore Court 6:3 Sevenoaks 4XI

The opening game of the season saw the 2s face Sevenoaks 4s who were relegated with us into this league at the end of last season. Oaks bought along a 50:50 mix of adult and junior talent whereas Court looked to be fielding a more experienced side throughout.

Court won a short corner in the first minute and Surridge opened his 23/24 season goal account from the top of the D, 1-0.

Shortly afterwards a second short corner was awarded and a slip left to Nicholls was flicked low across the goal and Middleton was sure to see it in for 2-0. Oaks won a short corner at the other end and were nearly denied but for a bouncing ball that couldn’t quite be stopped on the line 2-1.

Half time saw an injury substitute for goalkeeper Leyden. Any nerves for the substitute keeper disappeared when Clarke scored to take it to 3-1 and followed up soon after when he sent the keeper the wrong way and released a bouncing bomb slowly towards the back post for 4-1.

After several good saves a penalty flick was conceded which Oaks scored for 4-2. The simplest hockey became the most effective and Court continued to look the more dominant team from back to the front as the passes flowed.

The best was yet to come when Orr hit a cross field ball to Jennings who expertly controlled a tricky ball to play in Shepperson lurking near the baseline who cooly flicked into the far-side net at a tight angle for the fifth goal.

The final goal came in a p-spot scramble where Stone picked up a loose ball and hit confidently on the upright reverse to make the final score 6-3.

A great start to the season on the new Astro surface.

Burnt Ash 2XI 2:4 Gore Court 2XI

The 2XI went into the M25 for an away day versus Burnt Ash 2XI, looking to build upon last week’s win against a historically gritty opposition.

The opening passages of play were evenly balanced but Court soon started moving the ball around with confidence and were first to get on the score sheet. A short corner drag flick from Jonas was saved and sharp thinking on the left of the D saw Pittard recycle the ball around the top through Middleton and onto Surridge to flick home for 1-0. Our second short corner was flicked low into the left corner by Jonas for 2-0 and shortly afterwards another short corner was sent low to the right by Jonas for 3-0 before the break.

A difficult lead to put on ice for 35 minutes, Burnt Ash were awarded a short corner which was flicked into the side netting for 3-1. Solid distribution around the defensive 4 continued and Shepperson put long aerial balls to good use. At the other end Clarke got hold of the ball high to the right and went goal bound along the baseline, and with selfless decoy running from Pittard onto the P-spot,  Clarke somehow found space to squeeze the ball through at the near post for 4-1. Burnt Ash didn’t fade and hoped for more but became frustrated as time drew on without chalking up any more goals. A short corner for Ash saw stand-in Keeper Patrick make an excellent double save but unfortunately another corner was awarded and their drag flick specialist found the underside of the crossbar for 4-2 shortly before the final whistle.
