Tunbridge Wells 5XI 1:1 Gore Court 4XI

The league season got underway for Gore Court 4s with a hard-fought trip away to Tunbridge Wells. The first half saw chances both ways, Court failing to hit the target from some good opportunities but also defending very strongly to ensure it remained even.

Mike Green came closest to breaking the deadlock with a powerful shot that went narrowly over, while at the other end Patrick Hogben continued his fantastic form from last season in goal on his way to a man of the match performance.

The youngsters worked tirelessly, with some good runs from Isaac Pellat looking dangerous, but some early season rustiness all around meant that the passes were often not quite as incisive as needed and both teams remained scoreless to half time.

The second half saw much of the same, with Court proving hard to break down in the face of some good hockey by the home side. Alfie Short in particular made some crucial defensive plays, sweeping up loose balls with great composure. It took until deep into the second half, as tired legs began to show, when Tunbridge Wells finally managed to break the deadlock from a somewhat fortuitous penalty flick that was put away nicely.

However, this invigorated the visitors to push forward for the last five minutes with nothing to lose, choosing to throw men up field in somewhat of a smash and grab to try to pinch a hard-earned point. A couple of quick chances followed, leading to a short corner where vice-captain Paul Birch showed his experience in coolly slotting home the equaliser.

A draw was probably a fair result, the home side probably having more of the ball but perhaps less clear-cut chances, and the visitors will certainly be pleased to get their account opened with a point at the first opportunity.

Gore Court 4XI 1:8 Sutton Valence 2XI

Gore Court 4s suffered defeat in their first outing on the newly re-laid Westlands surface. The home side started well and had the better of the action early on and were unlucky to go behind following a mix up between keeper and defence, and were deservedly level not long after through a great strike from new father James Anderson!

However, from then on it all seemed to go one way. A couple of quick goals for the visitors before the break saw a half time score line of 3-1.

In the second half, Court struggled to mount any serious offence. Kieran Hudson in goal, stepping up from the 5s for the first time, made some very good saves but was unable to do much to stem the flow, as goals came from all angles.

Sam Heather had a good game and was deservedly named man of the match, looking good in both defence and attack and showing maturity beyond his years in pressure situations.
